Sediment Control
Sediment Basin
A temporary pond built to capture runoff from larger disturbed areas, allowing sediment to settle before discharge.
Inspection Checklist
- Outlet structure (skimmer or riser) is free of debris.
- Embankments are stable and not eroding.
- Basin is not filled with sediment (>50% capacity).
- Emergency spillway is stabilized with rock.
Common Failures
- Short-circuiting: Inlet too close to outlet, preventing settling.
- Clogged outlet causing excessive flooding.
- Turbid discharge leaving the site.
- Bank erosion.
Maintenance & Corrections
- 1. Remove sediment when basin is 50% full.
- 2. Clean trash racks and skimmers after every storm.
- 3. Repair erosion on banks and stabilize immediately.
Inspection Freq: Weekly and within 24 hours of rain.
